LAPLACE’s mascot is modeled after the shoebill (guàn), a unique bird that lives in the distant swamps of Africa, and has been named “Lakoko”. This fascinating species, with its distinctive appearance and habits, has garnered much affection. Shoebills typically live alone or in pairs and are fully nocturnal. During the day, they hide in grasses or reeds, emerging at dusk to hunt. They patiently wait for prey, concealed in the dense vegetation by the water’s edge. When the swamps dry up during the dry season, they dig into the mud with their beaks to eat lungfish hidden below. Shoebills are admired for their patience, charting their own path, facing the world with a proud head held high. They bravely accept challenges, find ways to thrive in adversity, and continuously overcome difficulties, creating a sky of their own for their species.
